PDF to DST: How to Turn a PDF Into an Embroidery File
A PDF holds your artwork — but a DST holds stitches. Turning one into the other isn't a file conversion; it's digitizing. Here's what actually happens, and why a good PDF makes for a great embroidery file.
A PDF isn't a stitch file
A DST (Tajima) file contains stitch coordinates, colors sequencing, and machine commands. A PDF contains artwork — either vector paths or a placed image. Neither of those is stitches, so there's no direct "PDF to DST" conversion. The logo inside the PDF has to be digitized: rebuilt as embroidery with the right stitch types, underlay, density, and sequencing.
The good news: a vector PDF digitizes beautifully
If your PDF contains vector artwork (clean paths, as most logo PDFs from a designer do), that's the ideal starting point for digitizing. Crisp, well-defined shapes give us exact edges to work from, so the finished embroidery is sharp and true to the original. If the PDF is just a scanned or placed photo, we can still digitize it — we simply work from the shapes instead of the paths.
How we convert your PDF to a DST
- We open your PDF and work from the logo's exact shapes and colors.
- We assign stitch types and directions, and simplify anything that won't hold at your size.
- We set underlay and density for your specific fabric.
- We match your colors to standard thread charts.
- You get a production-ready DST — plus PES, EXP, JEF, VP3 or any format you need.
When the free converter helps instead
If you already have an embroidery file in another format (PES, JEF, EXP) and just need a DST, that's a real conversion — do it instantly with our free file converter. A PDF isn't an embroidery file, so it needs digitizing.
PDF to DST — quick answers
Can software convert a PDF straight to DST?
Not into a usable stitch file. The logo has to be digitized. Ours starts at $1 per 1,000 stitches, $6 minimum.
Is a vector PDF better than a JPG?
Yes — a vector PDF gives cleaner edges to digitize from, so the embroidery comes out sharper.
